Hoover U9145-900 "Z" 700 Bagless Upright Vacuum

Hoover U9145-900 "Z" 700 Bagless Upright Vacuum

Price: $179.79
Manufacturer: Hoover
Buy from amazon.com

Hoover "Z" 700 Bagless Upright vacuum is the world's first Sport Utility Vacuum. The patent pending Z-fold design offers the performance of an upright and the flexibility and stability of a canister. The patent pending Self-Cleaning Hepa filter cleans itself every 6 seconds. Fine dirt and dust are trapped by the filter as it rotates while the larger particles fall into the dirt cup. As it reaches the cleaning position, a combination of reverse flow and gentle tapping releases the fine dirt and dust from the filter. Dirt and dust fall into the dirt cup. The filter continues to turn and the next section is cleaned. The DigiTouch Control Pad allows for the ease of simply touching the desired setting and having it automatically adjust the On/Off switch, Automatic Carpet Height Settings, Automatic Hard Surface Settings, Gentle brush settings, and diagnostic indicators. The Telescoping Quick Release Wand with Super Stretch Hose gives you 20 feet of cleaning reach for easy stair cleaning, and the hose swivels 360 degrees so it won't kink or topple the vacuum. In addition, the Z comes with a Pet Hair Cleaning Tool, Lifetime LED Headlights, Extra 16" Cleaning Wand and a 14" Floor Brush as well as a 35 foot power cord. The Z 700 also has a 2 Year Warranty and is virtually Maintenance Free. No belts, bulbs, bags, or filters to replace...ever.

Product Reviews

Definitely a very good vacuum cleaner
I've had my Hoover 700 for 6 weeks now and everytime I use it I tell myself I should add my review for this cleaning machine. I think buying a new vacuum cleaner is like buying a car... you know your going to be using it for quite awhile and you definitely want to make the right choice!

Overall, I'm more than happy that I chose this machine. After using it quite a bit I have only found a couple things I'm not overly happy with.

Here are my positives:
1) Does a great job of cleaning. I'm very satisfied with the basic job it does vacuuming. To be honest, I don't see how any other machine could do a better job. I replaced an 9 year old Hoover with this one and this EASILY out performs my old one (and I remember paying about $300 for it).
2) The wide tread is really a bonus and my carpet looks much better after cleaning... with the wheel's far to the outside the carpet ends up being fluffed up uniformly .. doesn't have much of the ... 'hey, I just vacuumed 2 minutes ago' look.
3) the conversion from canister to upright really does give you the best of both worlds. If you vacuum stairs this machine is a no brainer. In the folded position it is way stable.
4) The big surprise feature that I didn't know it had was an automatic shutoff if the brush becomes 'jammed'. I guess I'm a littel lazy sometimes and I will leave a pair of shoes out and kind of push them out of the way as i vacumm. Well, sometimes I catch the laces and this machine will detect the resistance and shut off!! I've ruined many laces over the years and had a hard time getting them out of my old machine. Well, I caught some laces again and the vacuum quickly shut down. GREAT bonus feature!!!
5) This maybe a common feature but I didn't have it on my old vacuum. When you put this vacuum in the hardfloor setting the brush's stop so now I'm not shooting small pieces dirt around on my kitchen floor.
6) I didn't think looks was important but I really like the fact that this doesn't look like a standard vacuum. I have a bird and I vacuum the family room everyday.. first thing when I get home from work. I leave this Hoover out many times and when it is in it's folded position it is very unobtrusive. This is another real plus... it doesn't look like you have a vacuum sitting out.
7) It is much quieter than other vacuums I've tried.
8) I like the material the power cord is made out of. It is very pliable and has a slick coating... it does not tend to want to tangle like my old machine (big plus).
9) The telescoping handle is great even in the upright position. It really lets you clean a big area from one standing area.
10) The hose on this machine is very well designed... really pliable and expandable but kind of folds back into itself.. I'm sure alot of effort went into its design. Neat.

My not so positives:

1) The power cord/attachment compartment is too small for this model with the power cleaning attachment inside. You have to be very carfull how you wrap the cord and where the plug is located if you want to latch the cover down with no issues. My solution is to not store the power cleaning attachment in the compartment. Definitely not a plus.
2) Sometimes I have to giggle the machine by the handle to get the machine to release and fold down when I'm done with it... It seems to want to be in just the right upright position for that task.
3) The on board self cleaning filter is supposed to never need changing so this may not be a minus but if you ever do WANT to replace it, the instructions indicate it is not a task you can do at home.. you have to take it to a Hoover Service center.

Neutral:
1) The vacuum does take a little upper arm strengh to opperate. If you have very little I don't think this vacuum is for you however it is not that bad (although first reaction is that the vacuum is 'heavy' it soon does not seem to be an issue). But, I don't think I would like this vacuum as much if it was super light weight. I like it's stability in the folded position when I'm using the hose.. and I think the weight helps in the quailty of it's cleaning power... so it is a dual edged sword.

If you have a little upper arm strength I think this is a vacuum definitely worth the investment (again if you vacuum stairs too this machine is almost a no brainer).

Hoover Z 700 Bagless Vacuum
I have never felt compelled to write a review on any other product before, but I would like to share my opinion about my new Hoover Z 700. I absolutely love it! Plus I should say right off the bat that I got mine at Best Buy for a full $100.00 cheaper than everywhere else I price checked!
It's everything it advertises, has more than adequate suction and is extremely versatile. It's especially useful for use on stairs. I previously had an old WindTunnel that has served me well over the years. Mind you, I vacuumed every week with my old machine, but the first time I used my Hoover Z....I had to empty the dirt cup 5-6 times! I was astonished. I considered my new vacuum purchase for a long time and was leaning toward the Dyson Animal. I'm definitely happy with my purchase of the Hoover Z....it performs like I'd wanted and the price was much cheaper than the Dyson. It's surprisingly quieter than vacuums I had in the past and didnt scare my cats to death like my old one. Plus, asthetically....it looks really cool.

The only cons in my opinion are that it's a little heavy...and the motorized brush pet hair tool is not as great as I expected.

UPDATE ON REVIEW
Hoover has done an excellent job in the design of this machine, they have incorporated the latest technology in filtration and design. It can be used either as a canister or an upright, on carpet and hard surface floors, upholstery and blinds. Once you take the Z into a room you can do the floors clean the overhead fan, in other words, do the whole job. This vacuum is solid! It has the feel of quality. They did not skimp on features. Extra long cord, can do several rooms from one outlet. The hose length will allow you to do a flight of stairs with no problem. The wide cleaning head and power brush allow for less time in a room.

UPDATE:
Have had this a little over a year now. Repair Problems! Contacting Hoover, now owned by Dirt Devil is an excercise in patience. They showed no knowledge of this discontinued model. I need a small rubber part which they could not locate. I will have to take it to a repair shop. I would rate this product at about two stars no because of the problems that I have experienced since my first review. Current pricing is far below the $500.00 when first available.

Amazon.com Review
This powerful upright vacuum harnesses the power of Hoover’s WindTunnel technology--a patented air flow design that prevents dirt and debris from being redistributed back onto the carpet or into the air. Powered by a robust 12-amp motor, it features a unique twin-chamber design. Eliminating the hassle and ongoing expense of changing disposable bags, the catch chamber has an easy-to-empty dirt cup with a tightly sealed lid that won’t let grime escape. The HEPA filter chamber makes the U5700 a great choice for allergy and asthma sufferers, capturing even the finest dust and allergy-causing micro-particles that other vacuums miss or re-circulate.
This vacuum comes with a full suite of on-board tools for above-surface cleaning or vacuuming hard-to-reach areas, including an attached hose, two extension wands, a dusting brush, furniture nozzle and crevice tool. Powerful suction and automatic tool conversion make these add-ons as useful as the vacuum itself. Hoover’s unique edge groomers remove dirt next to baseboards and furniture that most vacuums miss, and a headlight illuminates dark crevices and underneath furniture. A carpet-height setting adjusts to different cleaning conditions, and the vacuum cleans in a 15-inch path. This vacuum cleaner has been factory reconditioned, meaning it was returned to the manufacturer, who restores the appliance to like-new condition without the brand-new price. Some models may have cosmetic blemishes. Purchase includes a six-month warranty. --Mary Park

Scared about Remanufactured Products
Dont be scared. I was very unsure about the quality but bought the product anyway. I was very pleased and still use the product daily with no complaints. The price was great and the product is great.

excellent suction
I like this bag less vacuum. It has good suction. I used it in my carpet floor and it produces 2 bag full of dirt.

It's been great!
This has been a great vacuum so far. We can do the entire house from one electrical socket due to the long cord. It has worked great for us!

Product Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Vacuuming becomes a pleasure, not a chore, with this self-propelled bagless upright. A special switch activates the self-propel function, allowing the vacuum to glide with little effort over floors and carpet. The function may be switched off for greater control in tight spaces, such as under tables or chairs. A separate but stored-on-board power hand tool is perfect for cleaning carpeted stairs and upholstery; it simply attaches to the vacuum hose, which stretches to five times its length and gains further reach with the included extension wands (an additional 20-foot hose can be purchased separately). Other tools include a dusting brush for books, lamps, and blinds; a furniture nozzle for upholstered furniture, drapes, clothing, and automobile interiors; and a crevice wand for edges along baseboards, dressers, and between sofa cushions. The height of the cleaner can be adjusted for use on both thick carpet and wood or linoleum floors, and a headlamp illuminates dark areas under furniture and in closets.

Dust and dirt are suctioned up thoroughly with this powerful12-amp vacuum. The patented WindTunnel technology with dual air stream and special ducts ensures that particles aren’t sent back out onto the floor but are captured by three filters. The pre-filter screens larger particles, the HEPA cartridge traps tiny particles of allergens such as dust mites, grass pollen, and ragweed, and the final filter assists in returning clean air to the room. The pre-filter and HEPA cartridge can be removed for periodic cleaning, though the HEPA will need to be replaced every three years or so. To empty the dirt cup, simply remove, shake contents into a trash bin, and press back into place. A one-year warranty covers the vacuum against defects.

Great machine!
I bought this just today, so if something happens adversely in the future, I'll update my review. However, just for today, I am DELIGHTED with this machine. Very powerful suction, and the "bagless" feature allows you to see exactly how dirty your carpet really is! We vacuum regularly (2-3 times weekly) , but this machine picked up almost a full cannister of carpet fluff, plus about 1/4 cup of gritty dirt, just from the living room. The machine I had been using was anotherr Hoover upright, about 4 years old, but half the amperage of the new model. I decided to replace it because I wanted to try a bagless model.
The dirt collection/filter cannister is quite easy to remove and, since it's transparent, it makes it quite easy to see when you need to empty it. I look forward to saving $$$ on vacuum bags!
The "self-propulsion" feature is nice and does make a difference.
The attachments (hand tools) are good, especially the powerbrush. A nice feature is that you don't have to readjust the machine to "hard floor" setting from "carpet" when using the handtools--a convenient change from the other upright vacuums I've owned.
My reason for not giving this model four stars instead of five was in the relative awkwardness of using the handtools with this upright--but that is probably going to be true with any upright. Hoover offers the option of purchasing an extension to the hose, so I might try that.

Excellent!
I just got the Hoover windtunnel self propelled bagless upright and absolutely love it. I was going to get the hoover upright that wasn't self propelled, however, this one was on sale and the same price. I am so happy I did. I am no weakling, but the self propelled feature is wonderful to use. It doesn't move by itself, but assists as you gently guide it along. I never thought I would need or like self propelled but now I'm hooked.

We have 3 cats in our household so I clean several times a week. I filled the canister with cat "fuzz" just from the family room. I never realized just how poorly my old vacuum cleaned, or else this one cleans better than imaginable. The bagless feature is great, not only is it easy to remove and dump but I like the dial that cleans the hepa filter. You just turn the dial and dump the dust that is brushed off the filter, and there was a lot of dust! I never had a bagless vacuum before, but when I dumped the canister, I saw that I had vacuumed up some change and the back of an earing. If I had used a bagged model they would have been thrown away.

The hand held tools are so easy to use. Just put the hoover in the upright position and the suction goes to the hose. Everything is so easy and straight forward even my husband could use it without ever looking at the manual first. I don't think I will ever enjoy vacuuming, but now I don't consider it a chore.

A very good vacuum
I purchased this vacuum after my old Fantom one bit the dust (no pun intended). The Hoover vacuum has some really nice features that I looked for when researching which vacuum to buy. Some new features I liked was I didn't need to unravel the entire cord from the vacuum in order to get to use the on-board attachments (big plus), the canister to pulls out VERY easily to empty the dirt and loads back in VERY easily (unlike my old vacuum that I had to play with the cansiter for 5 minutes until it clicked into place). This Hoover vacuum also has the rotating brush attachment which is very nice for my staircase. The only things I would change if I could would have to be the weight of the vacuum (very heavy to lift up & down the stairs). I would also like to see the dirt empty out from the canister easier. There are too many little crevises for the dirt to attach to & it ends up not falling out properly so I have to get my hands dirt to empty it properly. Other than those two things, I am very happy with my purchase and highly recommend this model to anyone wanting a very good quality vacuum. Also, a top magazine company rated this vacuum excellent which is why I seeked out this model.

Don't waist your $$, time or sanity!!!
The Freakn' Bagless Hoover Windtunnel:

1. There are two filters that need to be changed every 6-12 months (yah, right...more like every three months) and they cost oh, between $38-$50 depending on where you can find them...Wal-Mart? No, they don't carry this type...Target? If you are really lucky. Sears carries them, for about $49.00 a pop...and that is just one filter...you need 2.
2. You can't empty these puppies in the house because you have to tap (more like beat) the filter on the side of the garbage can and dust goes EVERYWHERE, YUCK! So, what do you do? You take it outside to beat it in the garbage can, then with the smallest gust of wind you are covered, COVERED, I'm talking an abominable brown snowman, with dust and dead spiders and anything else you sucked up thinking it was gone forever.
3. The screen...yes, not only the filter needs to be cleaned after EVERY...and I mean with EVERY use..there is this fancy little screen that you have to pull up and pick the caked on "microdust" off of and what do you use to do that???? Well, if you are on the ball (which I rarely am) you remembered your small wire brush...but if you didn't you can't really run back in the house holding this nasty dirty thing flinging yuck all over your house...so, you use your finger nail, yes, desperate times call for desperate measures.
4. It burns through belts...twice a year at least (they either break or stretch) not a huge expense, but a lame and time consuming one.
5. It looses suction, bad, after about 10-15 minutes of vacuuming, and then you have to do the whole filter cleaning all over again.
6. The attachment hose pops out ALL THE TIME. SO, you either learn to vacuum holding the hose down and in...or (more probably) you get it in there really good and pray it doesn't come out and resolute to never touch it again.
7. BOTTOM LINE: I have had this Windtunnel for about 2 years, I was not impressed the first time I used it...furious the first time I had to empty it...but I thought, well, maybe it will grow on me....Um, No. I actually stopped vacuuming, I hated it, I hated the waste of time for practically no reward, I hated the dust everywhere, I hated the expense, don't waste your time, money and sanity.
8. Okay, with all that said, I purchased a sweet little vacuum from Wal-mart a few months ago, and I have been waiting to find something wrong with it to pop up but I has not been disappointing yet. I have gone through 1 bag, (I vacuum almost everyday with 2 toddlers), but the bags are really compact I was surprised how much they hold. The light went off to change the bag and it took a whole, oh, 30 seconds for the whole process, the dirt was gone, in the garbage, just like that. And the suction is amazing. Go get this vacuum, today. Do not waist anymore brain cells on a bagless. !!!GE 12 AMP, 2 motor, home cleaning system!!! It's a canister and sucks like...well, something that sucks really, really great! Lol, I actually love to vacuum, really! Plus, the best part...it is only a little over $100.00 and it has a filter but it comes free with the bags. Cool. Get this vacuume today...now...go!

A Terrible Vacuum -- Avoid at all Costs
I just ordered a Eureka from Amazon after struggling for a year with this piece of junk. This vacuum is so heavy and clumsy that it is difficult too maneveur--even with the propelled motor feature. The attachment hose on the right side of the vacuum pops out all the time. This same hose, which is the main hose into the waste receptacle, is supposed to be used with the attachments. Because it pops out when doing regular vacuuming, I find that I have to vacuum the same spot over again to enable it to suction through the base unit. The stair cleaner attachment broke after one use. And the hose is so short that I just gave up on vacuuming the stairs with it. The vacuum jammed in the upright position, causing the roller to remain up, and I had to get it repaired twice. But the worst thing about this vacuum is the bagless feature. All the dust gets sucked into a plastic container. As soon as you open the container to empty the dust, the dust gets all over everything. It is a mess. The air around the vacuum gets filled with tiny particles and the vacuum gets dusty. And the filter in the vacuum gets caked with dust. I've had to rinse it off numerous times, which is nearly impossible to clean and dry due to the folds in the filter. I set it outside to dry for two days and when I put it back in the vacuum, it mildewed. I finally threw out the filter and bought a new one, but after one use, it was a mess again. This is the last Hoover I will ever own. If I could give it "0" stars I would. Whatever happened to the Hoover quality of yesteryear? Save your money and check out another brand.

Good performance, not so user friendly.
Well I looked around and find places like amazon really helpful. A place like consumer reports is nice, but sometimes I feel they are driven by factors other than the consumer's interests. Amazon is the closest thing I've found to real customer feedback.

As for the Hoover Windtunnel U5753-900:

Pros: It's a very powerful Vacuum cleaner. It does a really good job at getting up pet hair, dust, and dirt. The dirt finder is a really cool option. I'm surprised at sometimes when I can't see stuff with the naked eye the dirt finder can tell me if the vacuum is still picking up dirt. The hoover seems to be solidly built. It's a very well priced vacuum for it's performance level. It's tools are logically laid out and easy to use.

Cons: There are two major cons to this vacuum. One it's noisy. That really doesn't bother me, as I've owned hoovers in the past and they all seem to be sort of noisy. That's a small downside to me, but others may find it more annoying. The major downside is emptying the vacuum. This does not seem like a very well though out design. I have figured out a trick to cleaning the vacuum that I'll explain later. But you cannot empty this vacuum cleaner in the house. It's clumsy and not at all simple to remove dirt from the vacuum.

My trick to emptying and cleaning this vacuum are to use my garage shop vac in my driveway with the bristle tool. It makes cleaning the hoover a very easy task. 2 minutes tops. That being said I shouldn't have to use a seperate vacuum to clean my new vacuum. Not to mention not everyone has the luxury, need, or desire to own a second vacuum cleaner for messy duties.

The windtunnel's majors selling point is it's performance price point. If Hoover came up with a better design to empty this vacuum they'd earn much higher marks from me. As it stands this vacuum gets a broze metal. Close, but needs improvement in it's emptying design.

Terrible!
This vacuum is definitely NOT the one to get. I've had this for a couple of years. If you like burning up beater bar belts you'll love it. Other problems are the filter is constantly clogged, no way to shut off the beater bar when you're using the hose attachment and when it comes time to empty the canister you'll find that getting it re-attached to the vacuum will usually require using a screw driver to pry it into place. Whatever happened to the Hoover name, with products like this they won't be in business much longer!

WHAT VAC DID THESE YO YO'S BUY?
WHAT VAC DID THESE YO YO'S BUY? IT SURE WAS'NT THE HOOVER WINDTUNNEL BAGLESS. IT DOES GREAT. I THINK THESE REVIEWS ON THIS ITEM ARE ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE. NOT THIS BABY.
OH AND I THINK THE DYSON GROUPIE HERE, IS IN LOVE WITH JAMES DYSON. I'M PRETTY SURE OF IT...
OH JAMES! OH THATS THE WRONG JAMES!

NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS SWEEPER.. HAD BOTH THIS AND A DYSON. THE HOOVER WAS A BETTER VAC. HELD UP MUCH BETTER.

no way to turn off brush, suction and filter not good
filter and suction is not as good as dyson, if you want that little dirt in ur carpets, get a dyson. pet dander, get a dyson, clean air, get a dyson, and the brush doesnt turn off. plastic is cheaply made compared to dyson too.

Not a very good vacuum.
Bought this thinking that a Hoover has been around and making vacuums for a very long time. Within months after purchase and use, this vacuum started falling apart. First it was the main hose connecting to the canister. This completely came apart, embedded electrical wires and all. You can guess what happened next...the main roller portion of the vacuum short circuited and no longer operable. There is no way to put the hose back together without the appropriate tools, or taking the whole vacuum apart. Trust me, I've tried, and I'm pretty handy. Vacuum is also extremely noisy with a screeching ear popping sound to it. The only good thing is the suctioning power, but what good is that, when main hose is no longer attached to the body. In my opinion, this is a very poorly engineered product. The person who designed this particular vac should be fired. That may be a little too harsh, but this vac is very disappointing and a total waste of money.

Amazon.com Review
A high-powered vacuum for high traffic areas, this 12 amp Hoover WindTunnel V2 upright delivers efficient design and versatile performance. The machine features a special duct system to prevent dirt from returning to the floor, and its dual air path suction and side groomers deliver optimum edge cleaning. Adjustable for bare floors and three levels of carpet, the floor nozzle has a 15-inch cleaning path and double brush rolls to get at the dirt between carpet fibers. The vacuum is conveniently bagless and collects debris in a generously sized double-sided dirt cup. A screen between the chambers keeps large particles on one side, sending small debris and dust into the second chamber where it's trapped in the HEPA filter. When the dirt cup is full, sliding it out and emptying it is simple, thanks to the sturdy handle and secure lid. The cup's HEPA filter can be tapped clean to extend its life, while the machine's prefilter and exhaust filter can be hand washed for repeated use.

For above-floor and spot cleaning, the vacuum comes with a ready-to-go hose and onboard attachments, including an extension wand, two crevice wands in different lengths, a dusting brush, and an upholstery tool. These are stored in side clips and a tidy front hatch. Beltless for easy maintenance, the vacuum also includes helpful extras, including quick-release cord hooks, a carrying handle, a 31-foot power cord, nonmarring wheels, a furniture guard, and a headlight. The power switch is in the handle, and the three handle positions are controlled with a foot pedal. Hoover backs up this unit with a full one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

Good Vacuum, but disappointed overall
After spending (money) for a vacuum, I expected all my past vacuum woes to be history. I was disappointed after bringing this vacuum home. The hoover replaces my '96 Eureka 7 amp bagged vacuum that did fine for my apartment and smaller house, but I wanted something that was more powerful & trapped more dirt/pollen, etc. I started looking at the windtunnels, but decided not to go with them when I read review after review about the belts breaking too often. In comes the beltless V2 to the rescue. Add the fact that it has 2 brushes & 2 intakes, and I was sold. After 2 months of owning this vacuum, here is my verdict:

The good:

* Good job overall. The nap on my carpet is a lot better after vacuuming with the v2 than after vacuuming with my old vacuum. But that's to be expected.
* Headlight helps find dirt you might have missed.
* Stretch hose saves space on the unit & is convenient to use.
* Longer power cord than most vacuums.
* Switch to turn off the beater brush. I have alot of hard floors, and this a big help. All vacuums should do this.
* Soft wheels. I don't have to worry about it scratching my wood floors.
* Dust cup is easy to empty, and the HEPA filter is easy to clean by giving it a few twists while still in the cup.

The bad:

* Will not pick up my cat's hair. White cat hair + dark blue carpet = lots of noticable cat hair on the floor. The v2 pushes most of the hair instead of picking it up, even at the highest height! I need to "pop a wheelie" over the hair & pull the vacuum towards me to pick up most of the hair. Very frustrating. Luckily my cat stays in one room, or else I would have returned the vacuum the first day.
* Won't pick up cat litter. I use Arm & Hammer clumping cat litter. When I push the vacuum over the carpet with any cat litter on the floor, the brushes shoot the litter in different directions before the suction can pick it up. What I don't go through for my cat.
* It marks the walls! A cardinal sin in the vacuum industry. Hoover should know better than to make a vacuum that's edges mark the moulding around the floor. Why, hoover, why?
* Hair gets tangled in brushes more easily than other vacuums. Maybe because it has two brushes, maybe because it's more powerful, or maybe because my wife is losing a lot more hair lately, but I've had to pull tangled hair off the brushes at least 6 times in the two months since I've had the vacuum. And if I don't pull it off soon enough while it's running, the room becomes rich with the aroma of burnt hair.
* Dust cup could be bigger.
* Had to replace the headlight bulb after 2 weeks. Maybe I bumped it too hard. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that one :)

Overall, I enjoy using the vacuum. I don't think it's worth the price Hoover is charging, and I suspect it may drop soon. If I hadn't already had to take a Dirt Devil back to the store I may have taken this one back to. Sometimes I just wind up settling for things. I think this is one of those times.

No more cheap vacuums--worth the price!
We have gone through one cheap vacuum after another. Our latest vacuum (a Bissel Cleanview Bagless 12 amp) clogged repeatedly. We have three dogs, one cat, a woman with very long hair, and three children. My husband gave me the Windtunnel V2 for Christmas.

The first time that I used the V2, I was amazed at not only how much dog hair and debris it picked up but the large amount of fine dust trapped in the HEPA filter. The old vacuum had been missing the dust. My carpet lightened immediately. The vacuum *is* slightly hard to push, but I need the workout anyway. It was nothing I couldn't handle. My 11-year-old is able to use the vacuum without too much difficulty; my six-year-old (who really wanted to because he thought it looked cool) cannot. Upstairs, we keep our old Bissel. One day we misplaced the cup and carried the Hoover upstairs. It picked up tons of dirt the Bissel had been missing.

Some positives:

*Noticeable difference in carpet after one use.
*The crevice tool does a great job along the moulding; powerful suction.
*Has never clogged despite vacuuming up copious amounts of pet hair.
*Love being able to turn the brushes off to do my tile/wood floors.
*Front edge is very 'flat' and the handle leans back far enough to allow me to get under furniture better (like China hutch).
*Attractive. Love the fluorescent green bristles.
*Collection cup is easy to remove, empty and put back.
*The hose stays put when not using attachments. The attachment end of the hose on my Bissel popped off all the time.
*The holders for the tools are well-designed so everything stays put.

A few negatives:

*The hose is way too short (but you can buy a longer one).
*On/off switch seems 'cheap' for such a nice vacuum. The fit between the handle and top part of the vacuum is not as tightly sealed as one expects in a well-made product.
*While emptying the HEPA filter is easy, lots of dust ends up back in the air, resulting in a few sneezes from this allergic vacuumer.
*A bit loud with the brushes on; quiet when they are off.
*Dog hair doesn't just dump out of the cup. I have to scoop it out.

Those are all fairly minor things I can live with. It's not a $500 vacuum cleaner. I did a lot of research before selecting which V2 model to buy, and this seemed like the best value. Instead of getting the $30 'power' brush, I recommend picking up a nice handheld Dirt Devil. It's portability is convenient. That was the only noted difference I could find between the red one and the green one. The black one has a few extras, such as a longer hose, powered hand brush, and a year longer warranty, but that didn't seem worth the extra price.

Amazon had the best price on this, as long as the shipping remains free.

The best hoover windtunnel yet
I'm in the relatively unique position of having tried three brand-new Hoover wind-tunnels at home in the last 3 months, trying to find the "perfect" one. The previous two were the windtunnel U5750-900, a red bagless design (the "V1" of this cleaner), and the U5456-900, which is a blue design w/bag, similar to the earliest windtunnel cleaners.

This one is my favorite of the three. It does away with several annoyances I had with the previous models (the oldest style being the most annoying), while introducing several new features. In comparison to those two older models, there are these improvements in my experience:

- No belt (direct drive), so no burning smell when belts get old or damaged.
- Dual agitators (deep cleaning quickly)
- Dirt bin allows you to rotate the HEPA filter to shake dust off it inside the enclosed compartment (less dust flying around when cleaning the filter than in the last bagless).
- It has a better cord and tools storage arrangement and one less filter to clean (no separate filter on the motor cooling vent) than the previous bagless model.
- It has an agitator off/on button (good for cleaning hard floors) and turns the agitator off automatically when the cleaner is in the upright position.
- The screen before the HEPA filter seems to catch much more of the carpet-fuzz and pet hair than in the last bagless, so the HEPA doesn't end up quickly fuzz-coated.

A few small negatives: it is harder to push (no front wheels) than the previous two models and some people may want the self-propelled version instead. A powered hand-tool is not included (it was included in the previous two). And it's slightly louder than the previous bagless.

But those shortcomings are pretty minor. I'm going to be keeping this one...

The upright Hoover U6637-900 combines Hoover's signature technologies--WindTunnel and Self-propelled vacuums--to give you the ultimate deep cleaning machine that is also easy to use. The patented WindTunnel technology uses computer designed dual air ducts and a vertical air pattern that direct the air flow along the front and rear of the agitator cavity and across the full width of the nozzle. They not only lift the dirt, but trap it so it won't fall back into your carpet. The WTSP (WindTunnel self-propelled) offers unmatched surface and deep cleaning on carpets of all types from deep plush to Berber, to low nap commercial styles and it even vacuums hard floors too.

The U6637-900 offers a bagless canister for no-touch cleaning and a three-year HEPA allergen filter, which traps 100 percent of dust mites, ragweed, and common grass pollen. It's self-propelled in both forward and reverse, and it has a 12 amp motor. The embedded DirtFinder sensor tells you when your carpet is clean--you'll know when the light on the front of the unit turns green. Other features include:

  • 15-inch cleaning width with dual brush agitator
  • Multiple height adjustment
  • Automatic brush roll stop
  • Front covered tool storage includes powered hand tool, long crevice wand, upholstery nozzle, dusting brush, and two extension wands

What's in the Box
Hoover WTSP upright vacuum, powered hand tool, long crevice wand, upholstery nozzle, dusting brush, two extension wands, printed operating instructions

Very heavy
This vacuum is okay, but not worth what it cost, in my opinion. It doesn't clean any better then a cheap 59.00 vacuum we had to get for upstairs because the Hoover weighs a ton. Yes, it's self propelled, but to move it from one area to another is hard because it's very heavy.I wouldn't buy one again.

Hoover Disappoints
I bought a Hoover Self-Propelled WindTunnel Bagless with Powered Hand Tool (Model U6637-960) in July 2007. I was reasonably happy with it until the motor burned out last week - just 4 months past the warranty date. I have a two-bedroom apartment; this Hoover received very moderate use. Of course I checked for problems with the roller, belts, and visible clogs. The dirt cup had been recently emptied. The next step would have been to take it to a dealer for repair.

I'm finished with Hoovers. I now have a Bissell Momentum Bagless (Model 82G7-1) that I quite like, so far. It is much lighter weight than the Hoover, and easier to maneuver. One of the features I liked about the Hoover was the powered hand tool attachment. The Bissell has the same type of attachment (TurboBrush). Suction through both the base the attachment hose is very good - better than the Hoover. The dirt cup is separate from the filter (unlike the Hoover) and easier to remove and empty. On the down side, the Bissell's dirt cup is smaller and has to be emptied frequently. I paid [...] for the Hoover (Costco, with coupon). I paid [...] for the Bissell (Kohl's, on sale with coupon).

Where to dispose of my disabled Hoover? For people in the Chicago area, this information might be of interest:

Abt Electronics & Appliances (Glenview, IL) has an appliance recycling facility. Another company picks up the appliances from Abt, and either fixes the used appliances for resale or recycles them. For more information, go to the [...] website and search on "Recycling".

Messy and Poorly Designed Canister
We returned a previous Hoover because the suction power was significantly reduced after the first 3 uses only. This Hoover cleans adequate but lacks in the canister design quality.

1) CANISTER SIZE is deceiving. Looking at the whole unit, it may appear that the canister seems pretty big. But it only holds LESS THAN HALF of what you see. I've had dirt flying out of the 3"x3" square opening in the back of the canister when emptying it. See my photo. Plus, we have to stop and empty it 3 times for a 20x25 foot room.

2) MESSY. Dirt goes flying everywhere when emptying the can! It defeats the purpose of having a "bagless vacuum." We've owned bagless vacuums before and this is by far the only one that's had this canister problem. With the cutout that I mentioned earlier, and #3 to follow, almost makes it a necessity to have to whip out the dust mask and biohazard suit.

3) CONTENTS COME OUT WITH DIFFICULTY. When it's time to dump the dirt out, you have to physically reach into the canister and pull out the dirt. All of our previous canister vacuums had never had a problem dumping the contents out. With this Hoover, turning it upside down and tapping it won't help. You have to keep reaching in and getting your hands dirty, touching all that yucky stuff, the bugs, the dust. I really think that Quality Control was sleeping the week this product was being tested. Note: I realized a year later, you must empty it before it gets to more than half the contents, to be able to just turn it over without using your hands.

All in all, it's powerful enogh, but lacks in canister size and ease of emptying the canister. We dread this machine everytime we have to empty it. Having to empty it 3 times as much as another vacuum that we've owned before Hoover, is one thing. But having to deal with the mess is just double the trouble.

Starting from a 0:
+1 for reasonably priced (compared to a $500 Dyson)
+1 for good suction adequacy
-1 reduction for the messiness
-1 reduction for the small canister size
+1 for over a year of still, no mechanical problems

= 3 stars even though I had rated it at 2 previously because it's passed the 1-year mark.
